In The Window: Wasp Style At J. Crew

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

It's nice to see J. Crew really embracing their customer base. A reader sends in the above image, with this note: "It's no secret that J. Crew sells clothes for rich white people without taste, but isn't this window display on Fifth Avenue offensively elitist and possibly racist?" Why, yes, it is—and it's also an advertisement for a party being held at the store this Wednesday for the book A Privileged Life: Celebrating WASP Style by Susanna Salk. In poor taste, surely, but J. Crew, elitist? They wish. Space at Lilly Pulitzer must've been too expensive.
