Live From Red Hook: A Curbed Network Blogathon

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Red Hook: sleepy Brooklyn nabe, stevedores hangout, artists community. Of late, thrown ingloriously into the spotlight due to New York Magazine's aggressive declaration that the "fires" of gentrification has "burned out" here. Why NY Mag writer Adam Sternbergh would decide to cobble together such a story before the arrival of a massive Ikea (possibly to be followed by another big-box retailer, Bed Bath & Beyond) is anyone's guess, but here we are.

Is Red Hook over, as the kids might say? The Racked, Curbed and Eater teams have convened in Red Hook, setting up shop at the very hospitable Baked on Van Brunt Street, to get to the bottom of the whole matter. To follow, a close up on some of the retailers that make the Hook great—and a look at the shopping forces gathering in the area. Stay tuned.
