Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Every year, come fall, there's a toy that captures the hearts of so many kids (and/or adults) that it incites a consumer frenzy. This year, that toy will probably be Pleo, an animatronic dinosaur from the guy who created the Furby. It's much more sophisticated than a Tickle-Me Elmo or a Tamagotchi, with operating system software that enables it to change and evolve as you interact with it. Watch the video and try to figure out if it's really cute or really freaking creepy. It retails for $350 and is now available for pre-order.
