The Theory and Helmut Lang sample sale began this morning at 261 W. 36th St. We stopped by a little later in the day to check it out, and were surprised to find no line to get in whatsoever. Inside, there are some amazing deals on pieces for both men and women from both brands (unlike the pricey items at Helmut Lang's last sample sale).
The inventory is made up of stock, samples, and irregulars, which does mean you'll have to inspect each item closely for damages (we spotted several), but the low prices make this sale a can't-miss.
The stock is split pretty evenly between the two brands, and racks are organized by designer to keep it easier to shop. From the women's Theory section, there's a bunch of great work-appropriate garments including paneled shift dresses for $65, sleek trousers for $50, and silk blouses for $45.
In the back of the sale space, you'll be able to find tons of Theory's signature knits—think cable-knit sweaters and soft cardigans for $45. The rest of the Theory stock includes a small selection of outerwear ($125), skirts and shorts, and a handful of blazers for $85.
The Helmut Lang section features lots of casual gear, like tons of $50 jeans and $45 cotton tees and tanks. Unfortunately, the selection of leather was pretty minimal—a few electric blue leather blazers for $85 and some perforated leather crop tops for $45 were all we spotted. There was, however, a pretty great selection of blazers for $85 each, including floral printed styles and sleek tuxedo-cut jackets.
The men's section is slightly smaller than the women's, and includes mostly work apparel, such as blazers from both brands for $135 and wool trousers for $50. There is sizable selection of Theory sweaters over here for $50 each, and lots of Helmut Lang jeans ($50) and denim jackets ($135)) as well.
There are two separate fitting rooms in the sale space (one for men and one for women). Though the lines for both the fitting room and to pay were a bit long when we were there, they moved fast. Most of the merch will be restocked throughout the sale, and further markdowns are possible on the last day.—Gillian Fuller
