First, Hudson Yards gets its own scent; now, it may very well be getting a department store. The Post reports that Neiman Marcus is finalizing a deal for a multi-level store that could be up to 200,000 square feet, or one-fifth of the retail space available in the up-and-coming neighborhood.
If the deal goes through, expect the Dallas-based store to open in 2018. That's also the same year we're expecting Nordstrom to debut in the city.
Neimans has been hesitant to enter New York City, the paper explains, because it owns Bergdorf Goodman and did not want to be in competition with itself. But since the city's luxury shopping scene has exploded over the past decade, they decided that Neiman's presence wouldn't be a problem.
Some, however, think the location will have a negative impact on business. They had to find somebody from Dallas who didn't understand New York real estate," and unnamed source told the paper. "They think ladies are going to get in a cab to go shop when they can walk to Fifth Avenue?"
The department store and Related Cos., the site's developer, both declined to comment to the Post.
