Over the weekend, Mini Mini Market, Bedford Avenue's longest-running retail business, announced via e-mail that it would be closing its doors after 14 years. Citing neighborhood changes like the forthcoming Urban Outfitters concept store and a rent spike, owners Dana Schwister and Erika Vala will be turning their attention toward sister store Shoe Market.
"I am really proud of the impact Erika and I have made in our community over the past 14 years," Schwister wrote. "The Mini Mini Market has supported so many small, local designers and inspired other retailers and entrepreneurs to express their own creativity in Brooklyn and beyond. I am sad to say good-bye to an era when North Brooklyn was a hub for artists and free expression."
"It is with really mixed emotions we have come to the decision to close the doors of Mini Mini Market," Vala wrote. "This business taught us everything, put us through everything. We started with nothing and built this business by showing up everyday and always hustling. We feel so grateful for those years and so thankful to everyone who helped us to make them happen."
And with its farewell, Mini Mini Market is starting its inventory closeout sale tomorrow, March 4, at 11am. While neither the discount amount nor a final closing date have been announced, shoppers who bid adieu to the Williamsburg holdout on its Facebook page get an additional 25% off their purchase. "That's basically free," the owners wrote.
