Ralph Lauren is linking up with the team behind the Fashion Manufacturing Initiative. He's pledged to donate $500,000 from the Ralph Lauren Corporation, which according to WWD will make him the "premier underwriter" for the project. Theory founder Andrew Rosen has already pledged $250,000 from his line and $250,000 from himself. Combined with a $1 million pledge from the New York City Economic Development Corporation, the initiative has raised $2 million so far.
The goal of at least $3 million will aid in revamping the Garment District to its former glory with a four-pronged plan to modernize its factories, improve working conditions, attract skilled laborers, and centralize information for designers looking to produce in New York.
Local manufacturers with at least two years experience can submit applications to the program until November 1st. The CFDA will announce grant winners in December, and distribute funds in February.—Cambrey Thomas
