Get ready for some super-duper fresh salads come fall: Whole Foods is partnering with Gotham Greens on a 20,000-square-foot rooftop farm. The greenhouse will sit atop the grocer's upcoming Gowanus branch and is scheduled to open late 2013.
The pesticide-free produce that is grown will be sold at Whole Foods stores across the city, eliminating long distance food transportation which means fewer emissions and really freaking verdant veggies. The farm—which is the, "nation's first commercial scale greenhouse farm integrated within a retail grocery space," apparently—will grow leafy greens, herbs, and tomatoes year-round. There will also be educational programming centered around the farm and, get ready for it, "a variety of green collar jobs." Thank you, Brooklyn.
