Maison Martin Margiela's lower-priced MM6 label joins the Bleecker Street mall today. Up until now, New Yorkers who wanted to shop the line could find it at Margiela stores (like the one four blocks away on Greenwich Street) as well as boutiques like Bird and department stores like Saks. But this is the only freestanding MM6 store—and it will stay that way until MM6 launches in Paris this winter.
As Women's Wear Daily describes it, the 500-square-foot space is a tiny Coney Island of contemporary style. The storefront "houses a mirrored, labyrinthine neon light installation," while the lone changing room is surrounded by "a similar fun-house mirror arrangement envelops the single changing room." The floor might look concrete in the photo above, but it's actually a carpet designed to look like the sidewalk. And staffers can rearrange a set of movable pressed tin shelves to show off the merchandise in different ways.
