Real estate developer the Lightstone Group wants to bring an upscale outlet mall to the Bronx, according to the New York Times. Back in May, the group bought a 19.2 acre plot that sits about a mile from the nearest subway in the Bronx neighborhood Ferry Point. It's currently occupied by a movie theater, Whitestone Multiplex Cinemas, but if the plan goes through, it might soon house the sort of luxury outlets that have made Woodbury Common one of New York state's most popular tourist destinations.
Most of the Times story is actually about Woodbury, which currently sees more visitors during the year than Niagara Falls, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Statue of Liberty, or the Empire State Building. Obviously, a Bronx outlet mall would be bad for their business, though with details scarce, it's hard to determine the degree of competition. All we know is that the Bronx, unlike upstate, already has the benefit of a local celebrity. "Love J-Lo, very fashionable," one tourist told the newspaper. "I would definitely go."
