The latest high-end fashion label to open on Bleecker Street might be an odd mix with Magnolia cupcakes. Maison Martin Margiela has staked its claim on 363 Bleecker, the space recently vacated by 36-year-old art gallery A Clean, Well-Lighted Place.
It seemed clear that the gallery was going to be replaced by something expensive, since the real estate listing called the location "the Far West Village Gold Coast Retail Mecca" and name-dropped Ralph Lauren, Burberry, and Michael Kors as desirable neighbors. But Margiela wasn't an obvious choice, as it's both artier and even more expensive than a lot of the local retailers. Also, the company currently maintains a boutique not far away, at 803 Greenwich. The signage suggests that the store will be an MM6, the brand's lower-priced line. Stay tuned for more details.
