DNAinfo, NBC New York, and dozens of bystanders on Twitter are reporting that Macy's Herald Square was evacuated about an hour ago after a fire broke out in the basement. An FDNY spokesman told DNAinfo that someone called 911 from the store around 3:15pm. Sixty firefighters from 12 units rushed to the scene, and by 4pm the blaze was over. So far, there's no explanation for what caused it and no reports of injuries, although hundreds of shoppers were evacuated.
