Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
You've read all the books, you've watched every episode of the show, you can recite the vows of the Night's Watch by memory—but would you get a Game of Thrones symbol permanently tattooed on your body? If your answer is "Yes, and I'll have you know they're called sigils, not symbols," then you should probably get yourself to Soho tomorrow before noon, which is when the Wooster Street Social Club starts offering free Game of Thrones tattoos on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The first 50 comers between noon and 8pm can chose to get etched with the markings of one of the five houses: the Stark direwolf, the Lannister lion, the Targaryen three-headed dragon, the Baratheon stag, and the Greyjoy kraken. (It's a squid, really. An evil squid.) This presents a fascinating social experiment, because while Game of Thrones might be the most complex, psychologically astute work of fantasy fiction ever written, the Starks are still pretty obviously the good guys. What sort of person wants to get permanently branded with the sigil of the untrustworthy Lannisters? Guess we'll find out tomorrow.
