The Meatpacking District retail scene is about to get even more interesting, as the latest rumor floating around is that—gasp—a two-floor Urban Outfitters will be moving onto 14th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues. A New York Post crack team of public records investigators has uncovered documents that "suggest" (take that how you may) that the purveyor of floral rompers and mass market hipster gear will be moving into the recently redeveloped and super-luxe 450 W. 14th Street building—right under the High Line.
The Urban Outfitters retail store will reportedly take up over 7500 square feet on the ground level, over 4000 square feet in the basement, and also move into office space digs on the fifth floor of the luxury building. As expected, officials from the Urban Outfitters and the real estate sides remain close-lipped about the matter.
The fancy, shmancy Meatpacking District retail corridor is still coming to grips with the impending departures of high-end Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen. A massive Urban Outfitters moving in just down the street is definitely a gamechanger in the nabe's currently high-end retail landscape. Think about it—could an H&M and Forever 21 be far behind?
