After nine years in the Meatpacking District, Stella McCartney is moving to Soho. Paper and String reports that the shop will relocate to 112 Greene Street, a building between Prince and Spring with some serious downtown history. In the '70s, it was—says the New Yorker—a "virulently fecund artist-run gallery" and in the '80s it became a hip-hop studio. (Salt & Pepa's "Push It" was recorded there.) Stella PR confirms that the move will take place at the end of 2011.
The Stella McCartney store was a bit of a pioneer when it opened in MePa in 2002. Jeffrey was already there, but the Times article about the store opening, which also covers the launch of Alexander McQueen, makes pointed references to the neighborhood's "distinctive odor." It also quotes a retail broker saying, ''For fashion-forward retailers and designers, this is making more of a statement than going to Soho or Nolita." Not so much anymore.
