It shouldn't come as a surprise that Tommy Hilfiger is doing a limited-edition collection called "Prep World," or that the author of The Official Preppy Handbook, Lisa Birnbach, will join Hilfiger at the launch. What should surprise you is that the pop-up shop is actually more like a pop-up house, modeled after an East Hampton beach house, and nestled in Gansevoort Plaza at Little West 12th Street and Ninth Avenue.
WWD reports that collection "will include 60 pieces that celebrate Hilfiger's preppy classics with a twist, accessorized with such accoutrements as boat shoes, duck boots, Ping-Pong paddles and badminton rackets." Sounds about right. But let's talk more about that house. It was initially supposed to descend upon Meatpacking on April 28, but it looks as if things have gotten pushed back until this Thursday, May 5. Don't worry—you won't be able to miss an 800 square-foot beach house in the middle of Meatpacking.
And that house is on the move. After spending time in the U.S., which includes a week in Manhattan, it'll be heading to several international locations, including Paris, London, Milan, and Tokyo. "While celebrating our 25th anniversary all around the globe in 2010, I realized the preppy look with a twist we pioneered over the years has gone global; every corner of the world interprets it in different ways," Hilfiger says, which is why he'll be bopping around the planet with the collection. Prices range from $45 to $178 for women's items and $35 to $298 for men's, and the line will be sold at Tommy Hilfiger stores, Tommy.com, and of course, those roaming Hampton beach houses.
