The women's section was crowded at the J.Crew fall 2011 preview yesterday, but it was nothing compared to the menswear section, which was packed with preppy dudes simultaneously eyeballing each other and the models. In general, tops were tailored (crisp jackets, slim trenches) and bottoms were slouchy. Guys with sensitive necks and hardy ankles will appreciate the styling, which included lots of scarves and ascots and absolutely no socks. Rolled cuffs were ubiquitous.
As uniform as casual menswear can sometimes be, though, there was a distinct range in looks, from urban lumberjack to young James Spader. And because J.Crew is crafty about balancing high style with mass appeal, none of it looked too hard to wear, even for guys who don't have statement beards or '80s bully swagger.
