Last time we heard from Aaron Genuth, he was running the 1929, a Depression-themed boutique that doubled as a soup kitchen in Nolita. Now, he's opening a thrift store called Life Emporium inside 515 Fifth Avenue, a new condo building in south Park Slope. It's rare to see a secondhand shop move into this kind of shiny new storefront, but 515's sales pitch all about sustainable living, so maybe it makes sense that its retail space embraces recycling. In any case, Park Slopers should appreciate the charity angle: Life Emporium is a non-profit supporting a Jewish organization for sick kids called Chai Lifeline.
The shop, which opened last Sunday, occupies 4,000 square feet over two floors. Upstairs is reserved for antique furniture and designer clothing for men, women, and children. The womenswear section is curated by Zia Ziprin, who runs vintage footwear archive Girls Love Shoes—current brands there include Sonia Rykiel, YSL, and Christian Dior. Downstairs has more of a thrift store feel, with more clothing and housewares, including books, records, and vintage Polaroids.
