First it was Trader Joe's versus Fairway on the Upper West Side. Now round two of the Manhattan grocery-store prize fight is taking place on the East Village where Union Market will make a play for the Whole Foods territory bordering the Lower East Side.
Scaffolding has appeared on the corner of Houston and A, hailing the opening of the fancy Brooklyn-based grocery chain's first Manhattan outpost. Union Market's home page also announces the impending Fall 2011 unveiling date and promises to bring "a little bit of Brooklyn to Manhattan." We hear that the Houston location will be Union Market's largest endeavor, taking up 6000 square feet of space and, similar to the Court Street outpost, offering an eco-friendly build, a beef aging facility and personal shopping services. Construction seems to be in the early stages—if it's begun at all—so Union Market still has plenty of time to devise its East Village stereotype-themed coffee blend.
