All the clothing designers, whiskey distillers, and hipster pickle vendors currently considering naming their businesses after New York's most marketable borough might want to pay attention to the movements afoot at Brooklyn Industries. The label is trading a Boston outpost for a new Dumbo store, suggesting that hometown pride doesn't play so well outside the reach of the F train. "We've been focusing on opening stores outside of New York, which we realized is a challenging strategy, and that it's much better to focus on what we know best—the New York City region," owner Lexy Funk told Crain's. As such, they're shuttering the year-old Boston store and opening a sixth Brooklyn location, this time in Dumbo.
The 2,200-square-foot space, in a prime location at 70 Front Street, housed tech shop Mikey's Hook-Up until this past November. It's around the corner from the Brooklyn Industries headquarters at 20 Jay Street, and while it won't necessarily be a flagship, it ought to benefit from the proximity of the office. The company plans to give it a hyperlocal spin with art installations that reflect Dumbo's aesthetic, and they're greeting the neighborhood with a special perk: A sample sale featuring all sorts of Brooklyn Industries merchandise for $40 or less. The sale runs March 3 through March 5 from 11am to 8pm; it's open to the public, but you can RSVP to pr@brooklynindustries.com.
