Williamsburg-based computer supply store Mikey's Hook-Up seemed like a natural fit for Dumbo when it opened an outpost there two years ago. The neighborhood was home to well-off creative types—perfect for an authorized Mac dealer—and its community of tech companies was just starting to grow. So it's a bit of a surprise to hear via Dumbo NYC that Mikey's has shut down, packing up its much-loved ping pong table and moving back to N. 6th Street.
According to a type-written note left on the door by Mikey himself, the problem wasn't business but spiritual. An unnamed "major corporate chain" recently offered to buy the company, inspiring a bout of soul-searching that left Mikey convinced that he'd rather stay small and focused than "try to clone the original vibe of the Hook-Up." The Dumbo shop officially shuttered this past Saturday; fans can find Mikey at his Williamsburg location on N.6th and Wythe.
