This is Store Sidekicks, an end-of-the-week feature in which we profile the fuzzy wuzzy creatures that inhabit shops across the city. If you'd like to nominate your favorite store animal, drop us a line at tips@racked.com.
There are several reasons why Zoey of Brooklyn's Callalilai boutique is so tiny. First, she's part Chihuahua; second, she's part mini-Dachshund; and third, she's only about four months old.
Zoey appeared in the life of store manager Candice a few weeks ago under serendipitous circumstances. Candice was walking down Pacific Avenue, not far from the store, when a strange woman approached her and said that a man had abandoned the puppy at her job. The woman was fostering the dog, she said, but she couldn't keep her. Candice had always wanted a dog, so she decided to adopt Zoey on the spot.
Since then, Zoey has spent every one of Candice's work days at the store, a warm, bohemian space lined with kilim rugs and draped in label Aoyama Itchome's signature swirling prints. It's a perfect place for a puppy—we stopped by during an impromptu sale, and Zoey was curled up in the corner of a box of scarves, where she could nap and Candice could keep an eye on her.
