Monocle magazine, which calls itself the "global briefing covering international affairs, business, culture and design," will soon add the West Village to its list of brick-and-mortar shop locations around the world. The shops, in Los Angeles, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and London, all stock issues of the magazine, Monocle collaborations, and "favourite" international products.
The New York store, which is on 535 Hudson Street at Charles Street will officially open August 30th. Presently the awning is up, but the store is bare and unfurnished. First impression: It's very, very small. Think in the range of 100 square feet. This spacial challenge is probably due to the fact that the location, formerly a Monster Sushi restaurant, shares its 535 Hudson address with hair salon Contesta Rockhair. Monocle is currently looking for a shopkeeper with a "keen interest" in the magazine's culture, but if you're at all claustrophobic, you might want to pass.—Alice Taranto
