Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Ralph Lauren is publishing a children's book, but we're not talking about a Madonna-style English Roses bedtime story here. No, Lauren's book is going to be an "online virtual experience," and it's going to have a shopping component. Kids can listen to Harry Connick Jr. tell the story of eight well-dressed boys and girls on their way to school. If they like the clothes they see, they can click on them for purchase. It sounds a little sketchy, but 15% off proceeds will go to the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, and in any case, it's not a new concept: People have been marketing directly to kindergartners ever since the days of He-Man.
