It's been a good ten years or so for Frye boots, the '70s staple that invaded department stores everywhere after enjoying an early-aughts comeback among vintage lovers. Now, Crain's reports that the brand will finally open its first freestanding store, a 6000-square-foot Soho flagship. The shop, at 113 Spring Street between Mercer and Greene, will occupy two floors: The ground floor and the lower level. Frye has retained hip architecture firm AvroKO to do the design, which bodes well for the space—AvroKo is also responsible for Kid Robot and restaurants like Public and Double Crown.
As the Shophound notes, though, this news raises a big question: What's going on with the current tenant of 113 Spring Street, M.A.C.? If the makeup giant is moving, the employees certainly don't know about it, and we don't see M.A.C. giving up such prime territory. The Shophound theorizes that Frye will actually take over 109 Spring Street, the former home of Von Dutch. Here's hoping he's right.
