We don't know what it is, but it seems that warm weather combined with the scent of discounted leather has a way of making women crazy. Exhibit A: The Matt Bernson sandal insanity. Today, we present Exhibit B: The Botkier sample sale, opening to the public at 11am today and offering 50 to 70% off bags, shoes and wallets. Judging from the ever-growing line and near-maniacal grabbing at last night's preview, we should be in in for a doozy today.
The leather bags run from $100 for the small Bond Street and Jetson clutches (regularly $275 and $325 respectively) to $295 for the larger leather totes like the fringed-zippered Venice satchel and hobos (both regularly $595). Bags and the price lists with accompanying photos are displayed throughout the room. We don't know what it is, but again, it is a bit difficult to match the actual bag with the corresponding photo and price. We know it's not just us because shoppers standing and squinting in front of the list was a common sight.
In the midst of the mayhem, we made a few observations. The aforementioned Venice Hobos, the large Logan Shoppers (for $275 down from $625) and the strappy studded Harper medium satchel ($225 from $495) are plentiful in various colors. Also, the large Dion ruched lambskin leather satchel ($250 from $595) in nude is much softer and richer than the version in black. Just a little tip. However, some bags on the pricelist were not to be seen, like the adorable little pewter Orion small shoulder bag. Disappointingly, but not surprisingly, all the sample bags were snatched up 30 minutes into the sale (we spotted one greedy, we mean, lucky, lady clutching three in the checkout line).
As for accessories, wallets and pouches run from $25 for nylon cosmetic cases to $75 for large wallets and leather pouches embellished with grommets. We spotted some really cute snakeskin print large wallets. The shoe section is located in a cramped corner of the space and styles run from $95 for slip on flat sandals to $175 for more substantial pairs. Highlights included the light blue snake print Sid wedge for $175 (down from $395) and the zip-front, platform Mona sandal shootie also for $175 (from $425). As of last night, there were about ten pairs of size 7 sample shoes available priced at $50 for flat sandals and $75 for heels. We're not sure if they survived last evening's preview, though.
The sale is in a small corner location which fills up easily. Just be resigned for a long wait today. Good news is that they will be replenishing from last night's onslaught and word is that they even held some stock just for the public sale. There is a no hoarding rule: You can only hold up to four bags at one time. Cash and credit are accepted.
