If Marc Jacobs were deliberately trying to irritate West Villagers nostalgic for a time when the neighborhood was less glitzy and more literary, he couldn't have found a better way to do it. For his sixth store in the area, Jacobs set his sights on 400 Bleecker Street, directly across from the Magnolia Bakery, which had housed the Biography Book Shop for twenty years. Biography relocated (and renamed itself Bookbook), but now it seems Jacobs is retaining the library feel of the space, making it into his local empire's first bookstore.
Meenal Mistry of Style.com recently Twittered about the name, Book Marc, which is really pretty cute. But the signage that just appeared in the store window doesn't mention Marc at all. It just says "A bookstore will be opening here Winter 2010," leading Jeremiah of Vanishing New York to wonder if this is some sort of sneak attack on Jacobs's part. Remember when Starbucks had a diabolical plan to open unbranded coffee shops posing as independent cafes? Jeremiah suspects this is a similar move.
