Everyone seems to have an opinion about American Apparel's now-concluded Search for the Best Bottom in the World contest, from the voyeurs who raced to the site in such numbers that it eventually crashed to the young women (all members of the target audience, btw) who find it totally degrading. But you know who hadn't weighed in? That's right: The communists. Until last weekend, that is.
The Villager reports that self-described "controversial young communist" Sunsara Taylor and a group of her comrades marched into the American Apparel store in Soho last Saturday carrying protest signs and fliers. When store employees asked them to leave, they took to the sidewalk, chanting "We need total revolution!" and "Women as breeders — no more!" and "Women as sex toys — no more! Women degraded — no more!"
Wearing a burka, protester Ray Geming acted out a skit about the universality of women's oppression alongside Alice Woodward, who had on a thong over her black-clad body. In response, two of the guys from American Apparel called the cops, tried to block the communists' banner with their bodies, threw their fliers on the ground and tried (unsuccessfully) to make off with one of their signs.
