The Costco in East River Plaza has only been open since mid-November, and already it's laying off workers. According to local news site DNAinfo, Costco just informed community leaders in Harlem that it intends to trim 160 jobs from its payroll of 453, citing low December sales. When the mall was being planned, its developers promised to create jobs in the neighborhood, so this is a particularly sad turn of events. Costco is the East Harlem mall's first tenant, which might be part of the problem—presumably it would get more foot traffic if neighbors like Target and Best Buy were also bringing in shoppers.
