Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
This is Store Sidekicks, an end-of-the-week feature where we profile the fuzzy wuzzy creatures that inhabit shops across the city. If you'd like to nominate your favorite store animal, drop us a line at tips@racked.com.
When we featured all of our favorite Store Sidekicks for 2009, a Racked tipster quickly reminded us of the dog at Nest Interiors. The quaint home-decor store, run by Lana Sexton and Henry Stozek, is home to an adorable half-dachshund, half-chihuahua named Fig.
Nest is located on Ninth Avenue at 21st Street, an area with heavy dog traffic. Fig gets a lot of canine visitors because of this, and because of the conveniently located pet store next door. Often, you can see the brown-eyed, bushy tailed pup running around the store, chasing after other pooch pals. On your next trip to to the neighborhood, stop by to check out housewares like glass-blown vases, tea sets, and steel trinkets—and to wish Fig a happy fifth birthday, which he is celebrating today with lots of dog treats.—Joann Pan
